Choosing a Gi at the start can feel like a daunting task but the reality is with Jiu Jitsu Gi's that they are all quite similar in terms of their function therefore the main considerations are fit, quality and of course price. In this article we will show you the best way to make great decisons at the start of your BJJ Journey.
Here are some tips when choosing a gi:
The most important thing is getting the right fit.
A BJJ Gi is simply technical apparel, unlike Boxing or MMA where the equipment is very variable and poor equipment can cause injury.
You might also want to consider getting a rashguard at the same time.
Gi Sizing
The sleeve must be no more than an inch from your wrist when you extend your arm forward in the jacket. This allows for shrinkage.
Always adhere to the wash instructions, more experienced guys will know how they wash their Gi but early on be mindful of shrinkage.
If at all possible, try a Gi on before you buy one.
Use the size guide and bear in mind that the REVGEAR cut is roomy to allow for a little shrinkage. Gi sizing is largely based on height and muscle mass. If you are tall and slim, you may need a smaller gi than someone who is short and broad.
The Gi Pants are less important than the jacket in terms of fit, they are designed to be very baggy.
